INDIAN DERBY- SOME THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS

Indian Derby-2010-some stray thoughts and opinions…

I’ve read most of the pre race comments and post race adulations and excuses on various websites and blogs. Keeping in view these opinions I’ve come to a conclusion that in India we have an abundance of pseudo experts, pseudo tipsters ,pseudo journalists and of course pseudo ‘opinion makers’ .

Examples:

An indo-American ‘expert’ comments on various aspects of the Derby based mostly on his talks/interaction with intercontinental phone calls, with some jockeys, trainers, owner et al and expresses opinion or comments on pre- race and post race scenario and eulogizes Jacqueline as exceptional, though many of us knew it much before the Derby race and most of have to accept it willingly or unwillingly after the race!

Then we have an expert who also gets the info from ‘horse’s mouth’ again through owners/trainers/jockeys – seems to know most of them, personally and though analyses the race correctly puts a no-hoper as the first choice. But we all can be in the same situation, tomorrow. Even a roadside vendor outside racecourse would have said that his ‘tenner’ will be on Jacqueline!

Sharan Kumar , though partial to Padmanabhan , did say that Jacqueline will meet her match in Becket and proved to be correct. His opinion about Set Alight (he tried to steer away from controversy) and the current scenario was perfectly true.

I’m not going to comment on bloggers, because they have their views and opinions (prejudiced or correct) based on their perceptions and experience and have a right to express it , howsoever, ‘strange’ it may appear to a reader. He ,of course, may take it or leave it, without obligation. They are not ‘paid’ employees and have only ethical responsibility towards their readers, while these paid experts cannot avoid the responsibility of their failures!

Everyone is patting his back ,looking at you, claiming that – didn’t he tell you that ‘Jacky’ will win this race . But if you ask where were they, when Antonios, Hotstepper, Diabolical Mohawk or Pyare Miyan won this Derby- I’m sure they will look the other way. But this is what horseracing is all about . experts, soothsayers, astrologers/numerologists resurface immediately after a favorite wins – though they might have given an absurd choice before the ‘big’ race! There are many punters, casual and serious race-goers, observers, owners , trainers jockeys who opine, suggest ,predict the out come but they cannot be bracketed with these pseudo experts or opinion makers.

Having said this ,I must confess that I’ve not seen the race ‘live’ because I could not go to the racecourse on Derby day due to personal commitments, and could not even watch it on Ten sports or CNBC-18. The downloaded video is poor and worthless. I’ll make comments on the race only after I receive the DVD within a day or two.
Of course, I’ve given the position of first four placed horses correctly on Racingpulse.com before knowing the rider, draw number and the current form . But it’s an old and stale news/assertion !
