WISHING A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS DIWALI TO ALL

I was not able to post anything on my blog due to serious sickness of my close family member and though saying sorry to my well-wishers and readers is not mandatory, I must say so. 8 to 10 months inactivity demands that!

I'll try to be regular and help my 'followers'by sharing my views, opinions and knowledge for whatever it is worth and hope that some of you will gain something from this blog.

I'll start posting my selections, following the same method- principles and accounting methods, which I left halfway during last winter season, due to personal obligations to my family and hope that I'll do better this time.

welcome to all...

Pune race stewards were/are biased

Ciel Indienne has won the race on merit. Su chaliyo could not have beaten him inspite of having better form.It is reported by Mr. Vivek Jain that the Jockey has 'admitted'that he has tightened Su Chaliyo but it was NOT dangerous riding and while Sampson lost the whip , Su Chaliyo could cover only one Length over him in last 200m under hard riding with whip.

It is indeed laudable that stewards want fair racing but by 'selective' picks of few erring professionals and overlooking more blatant ,open infringements of some professionals they areconfirming their bias. The stewards of RWITC are a biased lot and are trying to kill racing in western India so that the the sport dies the natural death and these people can help the racecourse area grabbed by builders' lobby . Many of them are prominent owners in western India.

Everyone knows that RWITC has two main factions and they have not reconciled their differences which has seriously affected the horse racing in western India. The decrease in attendence and turnover over past few years, continuous increase in betting tax without any sincere or serious attempt by the club to reason out with state govt. is a manifestation of this infighting. However, if these 'men' can not find a better way to get even with their adverseries , they should not make a common punter a scapegoat to score a brownie point over others...

why Becket lost Maharaja's Cup?

I wanted to start with a non-controversial subject but finding none I'll start with the defeat of Becket in the Maharaja's Cup.

Becket(60kg) was beaten by Arabian Prince(56k)and Onassis(54k)in this Terms race by neck and 1 1/4lengths(nk=1/4l).Many racegoers- including punters, blamed the jockey, the trainer and questioned the capability of the winner. I'll try to explain the loss/win using the ageold classic theories and priciples - none of them mine.

Out of several hundred races run at a racing center in a season ,some of them have an 'aura' or prestige attached to them like, Derby,1000G, 2000G and few more.Every participant(horse(!),owner, trainer, jockey) wants to win these races.this cup falls in this category.

Becket beat Onassis in Indian Derby by 5 lengths at level weight(57k) and in Invitation he beat Arabian Prince by 7 1/2 lengths, again at level weight(57k).

As per the age-old classical theories in races run over 2000m - one length= 1/2kg. and accepting the fact that in Indian Derby and Invitation cup EVERY runner is on job we can say that Becket is 2 1/2kg better than Onassis and 3 1/2 kg. better than Arabian Prince.

The weights allotted to these 2 runners gave them advantage over Becket and they proved it.
I'm not using the pedigree superiority of these runners over Becket at this moment.

These aberrations will recur in future again and again and a punter must be aware of it and safeguard his interest by taking into consideration various factors and parameters of racing.

a brief on current Classic winners and runners

Jacqueline, Becket, Change of Luck( Gypsy Magic) , Native Knight et al…

The Indian Classic racing scene during current winter season was dominated by above four runners and no serious race-goers looked beyond them .
Most of the readers , not all (perhaps), will agree that these 4 thoroughbreds were/are the best of the crop of 2006. Who is better than whom , at present, may not be conclusively assessed as lot of heat has been generated by interested as well as ignorant followers of these thoroughbreds(TBs) in various columns and forums.

I’ll try to confine this article ,primarily , to the published facts , then opine on them and in final paragraph will try to summarize my viewpoint.

Jacqueline (King Charlemagne- Talita Kumi)(odds -12/1) won her first race from 10th position at bend . She always was ‘come from behind’ type and ran in the rear – whether lost or won her race, except Invitation Cup race , where she was always in the first 3 runners. Here I’ll consider only the races she lost rather than the one which she won ! Her second race was Poonawalla Multimillion where she(12/1) came from 10th. position at bend and placed 3rd. a neck behind Gypsy Magic(Change of Luck-now) who was also at odds of 12/1 and was 14th. Or 15th. at bend, then drifted badly on entering straight- towards outer rails, losing many lengths and finally the race was won by late Versaki (Even) – the favorite beating Gypsy Magic and Jacqueline. In her next outing she beat Gypsy Magic(Change of Luck) – the favorite again ‘coming from behind’(10th.position) Her second loss after PBMM she was in Bangalore summer Derby and she and lost by short-head to Aboline – coming from 10th. Position(her favorite position?!!) but she beat Gypsy Magic by 7 lengths in this race . she won several races at Pune and Mumbai including 1000Guineas, 2000Guineas ,Indian Oaks and Indian Derby(by 3/4length) beating Becket in a hard fought duel .She lost to Becket , her final race – Indian Invitation Cup - by head , by running against her norm – joining the front bunch at an very early stage .

Becket(Hawk Wing – Boiling River) had won Bangalore Derby by beating You Are So Beautiful by 4 lengths and though You are So Beautiful had beaten a late finishing Change of Luck(Gypsy Magic) but the race was 1600m 1000 Guineas. Becket came down to Mumbai to challenge Jacqueline in Indian Derby and was beaten(3/4 length) by her convincingly. She was beaten by him in the last stride by head in Invitation cup. He lost Indian St. Leger to Change of Luck only by short-head.

Change of Luck – last progeny of Stunning, who may carry her legacy and definitely her genes , had been an enigmatic disappointment till she won the Leger. I must categorically state at this point that I consider Stunning the ‘best’ broodmare of last 20 years. Almost close to one hundred posts/comments have been published how and why Becket lost the race and Change Of Luck has won but unfortunately no one has bothered to analyse the reasons for the loss or the win of these 2 runners .The genetic aggressiveness of Becket may be his undoing ,while the ‘closing’ and incremental improvement during race – a trait visible in the progeny of Stunning must have helped Change of Luck. Secondly, the ‘staying’ ability of Stunning’s offspring will always be better than many Indigenous and imported breeds.

Native Knight(NK) is a real joker of the pack ! He fits in everywhere. Before winter classics I made a remark that given an opportunity he can win a regional classic. He didn’t try. The connections were/are wiser! Still a maiden he has won more than Rs. 60 lakhs for his connections – much more than a monkey(Green Monkey – bought for $ 16 million) who could not win a race in USA and is a stallion(!!!) there. Why didn’t they sell him( a gelding) to Poonawalla is a mystery.
To be honest to him I must confess that he was the ‘best moving runner ‘ in Indian St. Leger and if he can retain the ‘condition’ and tries (very unlikely) to run Bangalore St. Leger may add a classic to his name!

I’ve already discussed their pedigree in detail, which may bring Change of Luck very close – almost at par with Jacqueline but racing performance – the acid test of a thoroughbred , clearly puts Jacqueline ahead of them with the rider – the longer she (change of Luck) goes , the better she goes…

Jacqueline - an Indian champion

Jacqueline- the champion…

Vijay Mallya - few moments before Indian Derby -2010 was run , made a poignant remark during pre-race interview ‘… after Set Alight experience, I have stopped predicting…may the best horse win’.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Jacqueline, of course the best runner on that day, won the race!

This is what I wrote about Becket ,before Indian Derby, at handicap stage, on 2 Feb 10

He is the only threat to Jacqueline and can beat her ,if the ‘luck of the race’ goes against her. If he has better ‘current form’ his chances may improve further, but if Jacqueline’s form is better she may continue her winning streak…

A slightly modified version of my article was sent to Racingpulse.com and was published a day before the Derby was run.
I closed that article with the final observation :

Finally ,based on pedigree analysis and past performance the Indian Derby -2010 must be won by Jacqueline but Becket is also a strong contender.
But if fluke has to win –then Native Knight, Onassis and Bruckner will have a chance

Jacqueline won Indian Derby beating Becket by ¾ lengths followed by Native Knight and Onassis…

After few days in a ‘post race’ analysis I wrote BEFORE the Invitation race was run:

What do we learn from this( Indian Derby) run of Jacqueline and Becket?

1)Becket would have given a better account of himself if allowed to give his all after 400/450m.
2)Becket or Jacqueline were not very hard ridden and have 5 to 10% chance to improve on this performance.
3)Invitation cup will be confined to these 2 runners only-unless ‘doosra’ pops up
4)Becket has a slightly more chance to show improvement than Jacqueline
5)Jacqueline has not reached her peak performance
6)Invitation cup will be more interesting than the Indian Derby
7)Jacqueline can win Indian St. Leger.

Indian Invitation Cup was run and won by Becket beating Jacqueline by head.
Both had recovered well after their grueling fight in Indian Derby. But the improvement in Becket was a bit more than Jacqueline. Final track on 28 Feb10 confirms this.

After the Invitation Cup, it was said that Jacqueline had ‘swollen’ joints and is being retired . Well ,the connections should always have the final say and their decision though hasty , was accepted by one and all.

Now comes the Indian St. Leger – the final test of stamina and endurance for a thoroughbred . It was won by Change of Luck( late Gypsy Magic) by a short head from Becket. It was funny to observe that while a 7 or 8 year old carries his old name (in bracket) – Change of Luck refuses to do so!!!

Almost close to 100 , remarks, opinions, observations have been posted about the win of Change of Luck or the defeat of Becket – but none has bothered to analyse the race properly and even the ‘experts’ have not brought out the race result in the correct perspective. Why should they? Un-appreciative readers, bookies lackeys who do not want a punter to learn from mistakes makes the post-race analysis a futile exercise and eventually helps the crooks to hold sway over gullible punters – who lose regularly.

But the heading of my article was – Jacqueline – the champion! I must , therefore, write few words about her.

Jacqueline has run, perhaps ,10 to 12 races and lost 3 of them before being retired. She had always won a race – whether it was a 1200m sprint or a 2400m Derby, off the pace, coming from behind but in Invitation she was kept ‘well up the pace’ in 3rd. or 2nd. position while Becket was loitering in the rear till 600m. In Derby Becket made the first move and Jacqueline came after him ,while in Invitation Jacqueline made the first move and Becket came after her . To a layman, it will look that the late mover normally, wins the race because Change of Luck also won the same way beating Becket in the Indian St. Leger. But this is not true , always. All our paid analyst, experts and opinion makers fail regularly because they avoid to provide post-race analysis. They do provide the running of the race .

Let me come back to Jacqueline again. Before 1000 Guineas was run I made a remark in this blog that Jacqueline can win Indian Triple Crown. After she won Derby my conviction was strengthened and though she lost Invitation with different tactics, alien to her temperament, I still thought that she will accept to run the Leger . She did not. The result of St. Leger – indirectly, though not conclusively, proves that she is the best 4 year old Indian thoroughbred and hence can be termed a champion.

Indian Derby - afterthoughts

Jacqueline – the Queen filly.

Jacqueline has won Indian Derby, beating convincingly, Becket, Native Knight and Onassis in a new course record time. The jinx associated with Morvi cup and Indian Derby favorite, by some regular, opportunist ignorant ‘experts’, has been consigned to the ‘dustbin of time’ – to reappear next year to amuse few of us.

I’ve been writing in detail on few selected runners of some races – mostly classics, since last few years using mostly pedigree angle, past performance and current form and had been reasonably correct ( not always), because I do not try to get ‘inside info’ or run after owner, trainer or jockey and form my opinion based on data available in public domain. Velvet Rope( Indian Derby), Abs Fab(Mysore Derby)- fluke winners , Southern Empire & Set Alight(Bangalore summer Derby) favorites winners and Set Alight(loser) Jacqueline (winner) of Indian Derby are some of the example of this methodology.

I could not attend the Derby and after watching the video recorded running of the Derby and reading most of the comments I came to the following conclusions. These are my personal observations/opinions and though do reflect my ‘subjective’ assessment but do not consider the opinions of ‘opinion makers’.

I’m told the odds of Jacqueline went up from 8/10 to 12/10 and of Becket came down from 15/4 to 13/4 or less indicating the perception, aspiration and the ‘hope’ of a punter – most of them ‘seasonal’ – 60 to 80% of them are first timer or ‘irregular’ and any change in the betting trend will force them to switch over to falling odds – those who lure gamblers know this basic human psychology trait! Seasoned and battle-hardened punter may not waiver but a casual, ignorant or un-initiated punter will immediately change sides. But this subterfuge did enable the followers of Jacqueline to make some extra money!

Coming back to the race, which was run in a ‘copybook’ style , there is nothing to comment upon the first half of the race - when Native Knight(+2L) –‘led’ followed by Becket who was 1 ½ length ahead of Jacqueline till 800m . From 800m all 3 became serious – Native Knight enjoyed or rued his rails position, Becket in midfield and mid bunch had lovely opening and Jacqueline from rails to out to mid-bunch were within 4 lengths of each other at 600m, positioning themselves for the ‘finale’.

Becket , 4 to5 horse-wide but only 3 lengths behind Classerville (leader) got the ‘first run’ opportunity at 600m with the unobstructed vast expanse of Mahalaxmi straight ahead of him, while Native Knight and Jacqueline were contemplating their next move. The camera at bend at Mahalaxmi are placed so stupidly(or intentionally?) that though there is no interruption in the race ,the human vision takes few seconds to new ‘display’ at bend. Therefore, while Becket , on tight reign at bend, rider sitting like a motionless robot from 700m to 450m –covering ground, leaving the front runners behind and establishing a commanding lead of 3 to 4 lengths at 400m ,without flexing a muscle, my heart would have also stopped beating –like Shirke said after the race. The movement of Becket between 650m to 400m is a ‘poetry in motion’. Jacqueline moved fast between 1000m to 600m from rear bunch( -8 to 10 lengths) to mid bunch ( – 4 lengths) and extricating herself from the crowd found herself almost 4 to 5 lengths behind Becket at 350m. Now ridden hard, but not desperately she covered the gap and leveling at 50m went ahead and was apparently eased a bit in last few strides.

What do we learn from this run of Jacqueline and Becket?

1) Becket would have given a better account of himself if allowed to give his all after 400/450m.
2) Becket or Jacqueline were not very hard ridden and have 5 to 10% chance to improve on this performance.
3) Invitation cup will be confined to these 2 runners only-unless ‘doosra’ pops up
4) Becket has a slightly more chance to show improvement than Jacqueline
5) Jacqueline has not reached her peak performance
6) Invitation cup will be more interesting than the Indian Derby
7) Jacqueline can win Indian ST. Leger

Invitation cup race will be an interesting race – reminiscent of Royal Tern /wild Blossom or Affirmed/Aldyar rivalry , with the exception that in the former 2 cases the winner was far better but in the present case though Jacqueline has an edge over Becket but it is not very pronounced.

Of course in Indian scenario if Diabolical can beat Southern Empire and Antonios can humble Set Alight – even a Native Knight can win Indian Invitation cup! Truth is bitter , sometimes, but truth is truth…Like an ostrich it can’t be denied by burying your head in the sand…

INDIAN DERBY- SOME THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS

Indian Derby-2010-some stray thoughts and opinions…

I’ve read most of the pre race comments and post race adulations and excuses on various websites and blogs. Keeping in view these opinions I’ve come to a conclusion that in India we have an abundance of pseudo experts, pseudo tipsters ,pseudo journalists and of course pseudo ‘opinion makers’ .

Examples:

An indo-American ‘expert’ comments on various aspects of the Derby based mostly on his talks/interaction with intercontinental phone calls, with some jockeys, trainers, owner et al and expresses opinion or comments on pre- race and post race scenario and eulogizes Jacqueline as exceptional, though many of us knew it much before the Derby race and most of have to accept it willingly or unwillingly after the race!

Then we have an expert who also gets the info from ‘horse’s mouth’ again through owners/trainers/jockeys – seems to know most of them, personally and though analyses the race correctly puts a no-hoper as the first choice. But we all can be in the same situation, tomorrow. Even a roadside vendor outside racecourse would have said that his ‘tenner’ will be on Jacqueline!

Sharan Kumar , though partial to Padmanabhan , did say that Jacqueline will meet her match in Becket and proved to be correct. His opinion about Set Alight (he tried to steer away from controversy) and the current scenario was perfectly true.

I’m not going to comment on bloggers, because they have their views and opinions (prejudiced or correct) based on their perceptions and experience and have a right to express it , howsoever, ‘strange’ it may appear to a reader. He ,of course, may take it or leave it, without obligation. They are not ‘paid’ employees and have only ethical responsibility towards their readers, while these paid experts cannot avoid the responsibility of their failures!

Everyone is patting his back ,looking at you, claiming that – didn’t he tell you that ‘Jacky’ will win this race . But if you ask where were they, when Antonios, Hotstepper, Diabolical Mohawk or Pyare Miyan won this Derby- I’m sure they will look the other way. But this is what horseracing is all about . experts, soothsayers, astrologers/numerologists resurface immediately after a favorite wins – though they might have given an absurd choice before the ‘big’ race! There are many punters, casual and serious race-goers, observers, owners , trainers jockeys who opine, suggest ,predict the out come but they cannot be bracketed with these pseudo experts or opinion makers.

Having said this ,I must confess that I’ve not seen the race ‘live’ because I could not go to the racecourse on Derby day due to personal commitments, and could not even watch it on Ten sports or CNBC-18. The downloaded video is poor and worthless. I’ll make comments on the race only after I receive the DVD within a day or two.
Of course, I’ve given the position of first four placed horses correctly on Racingpulse.com before knowing the rider, draw number and the current form . But it’s an old and stale news/assertion !

Indian Derby - a preview

INDIAN DERBY – 2010

I started writing this article before acceptance , but could finish only after acceptances have been published.

I’ll start with a prologue.

Long ago ( 3 ½ years in horseracing is very long) , to be exact – in Jul 2006, I wrote an article(still available in IHRB Archives) on Indiarace.com with the heading ‘MAM has all the Aces…’ and listed out his promising runners – Southern Empire, Haunting Memories, Secret Memory ,Diabolical ,et al and opined that he can win most of the forthcoming classics. He did win most of the classics and added a new word to Indian racing dictionary – ‘doosra’ . Many before him tried this formula ,succeeded sometimes, but failed most of the time!

To be honest to him, I must say that this is an universal practice! He was not the first one to start or invent it !

Why am I starting with a ‘dead’ issue?
Because , this year we have 3 hopefuls belonging to a ‘jodi’ – one of which may win Indian Derby . They are – in order of my preference – Jacqueline, Bruckner and Onassis.
Most probably, I presume, all the three will be running in the Derby.

Many ‘experts’ opine that Morvi cup winner or Ruia cup winner normally loses Indian Derby . Their opinion is based on last few year’s results - they never bother or try to study and analyse ,these races properly because expressing an opinion on the net is free. I’ll not comment on them because I’ve no time . RR Byramjee has won more Indian Derbies after winning Morvi/Ruia cups than any other trainer and it helped him to get better odds!

In my opinion there are 5 contenders for Indian Derby 2010 and they are, in alphabetical order:
Becket
Bruckner
Jacqueline
Native Knight
Onassis

I’ve already written enough about Jacqueline and Native Knight and will reproduce only relevant points about them. Therefore , I’ll talk more about others.

Becket( Hawk Wing-Boiling River) with Roman dosage(8-5-12-1-0) is a perfect specimen of current breeding practices. Take one of prominent sire/dam line( to reduce cost of breeding) and hope that second or third generation of inferior partner will produce a good juvenile . The dam(Boiling River) and grand dam(Burning River) of Becket did not perform/race on the race track, but the great grand dam Prospector’s fire did produce grade I winners and P Fire’s dam Native Street was a very successful runner and producer of classics and graded race winners but is a 4th generation ancestress! But that is not the point . The most astonishing point which most of the ‘experts’ failed to recognize was that Becket’s grand dam – Burning River (20-20-21-1-0) has 62 Roman dosage points ! A thoroughbred cannot have more than 64 dosage point and here we have an un-raced mare with almost maximum points. Strange facts – but facts they are. Why she did not race? Was she unsound or had crooked legs or some other deformity will never be known to an ordinary punter but it does ,indirectly, reflects on the running pattern of Becket. Even the great grand dam – Prospector’s Fire(22-16-18-4-0) has 60 dosage points – rarely seen these days in the pedigree of even champion sires!

Leaving the un-answered questions behind, let us look at the positives of this runner.
Hawk Wing( Woodman-La Lorgnette ) (dosage: 9-3-16-2-0),trained by A O’Brien was highest rated international (133) 4yo during his heydays beating French Derby and ‘Arc’ winner Dalakhani(132). Losing 2000Guineas to Rock of Gibraltar he was installed favorite(9/4) for Epsom Derby and lost it by 2 lengths to stable mate Chaparral(9/2). Chaparral was 3rd. at bend and Hawk Wing was 5th. in mid bunch and while on entering straight Chaparral sped away from the field followed by HW and both were almost 12 lengths ahead of the field at the finish. A ‘doosra’ is not unique to India only!
Sire of HW – Woodman(Mr.Prospector-Playmate) (20-10-26-0-0) born in USA raced in Ireland and similar to Hawk Wing was a champion 2yo of his time. Like Hawk Wing he also suffered injuries and retired to stud after 5 races , but he produced many classic winners –in addition to Hawk Wing. Hansel(winner of Preakness and Belmont(2400m) in 1991) was perhaps the best of them.

But the staying ability of a thoroughbred, normally, does not come from the sire and the dam ,grand dam and great grand dam through various male and female channels pass it on to the offspring . I’ll not go to genetic multiplicity and to remain readable will use only layman terminology.

The staying ability comes through mitochondria. Mitochondria is the key .

Boiling River, Burning River – never had much/any chance to perform on the track but had superb Roman dosage and this inheritance can not be ignored. Let us have a look at other female contributors.
La Lorgnette(Val de l’Orne-The Temptress) (2-0-14-6-2) dam of Hawk Wing is the key to the Bangalore Derby win of Becket. She was the champion Canadian female race horse ,very tall(17.1 hh), well built ,winner of Canadian Oaks and many other graded races. To cut the long story short let us have a fleeting glance at Becket’s performance. A winner of all the races in which he participated , I’ll consider only his Hyderabad win on Invitation weekend where he pulverized a decent field and followed it up in Bangalore Derby. Though his Derby win with poor timings does not enhance his reputation. He is the only threat to Jacqueline and can beat her ,if the ‘luck of the race’ goes against her. If he has better ‘current form’ his chances may improve further, but if Jacqueline’s form is better she may continue her winning streak.

Bruckner(Ikhtyar-Allies Serenade) (6-1-7-0-0) , a nephew of Onassis – his competitor in the Derby, has a bit confusing pedigree – with a mix of speed and stamina in the top and bottom section of his pedigree; his performance, except Kolkata Derby win also does not offer any clue . His win in Kolkata Derby in record time is a fact, but Roman dosage fail in this case. The reason is not far to seek.
His sire Ikhtyar(Unfuwain-Sabria) (dosage:10-4-14-2-0) has won and placed in several graded races of 2000m, but the grandsire Unfuwain(Northern Dancer- Height of Fashion) (11-7-14-4-2) has won races upto 2400m. why? Because Height of Fashion(Bustino-Highclere)(3-2-3-8-6) is the major influence in the staying prowess of all the progeny and descendents of this stamina oozing line . Height of Fashion is the dam of Epsom Derby winner Nashwan and Nayef who won $ 3.5 million in stakes. Unfuwain has also produced 3 Irish Oaks winners in Petrushka, Lailani and Bolas.
The tail line of Bruckner also enhances his staying ability. His dam Allies Serenade (Allied forces-Rahy’s Serenade) after winning Mysore Derby was placed 4th in ‘all ladies’ Indian Derby 2004 because the first 4 position were occupied by fillies – Psychic Flame,Estonia,Sprungli,Allies Serenade and loitering in the rear in 17 horse field she ended 2 ½ lengths behind the winner confirming her ‘closing prowess’ which she must have given to her progeny who can reproduce her performance ,if given go ahead, against his owner/stablemate – Jacqueline! But will he get it ? Perhaps – no.

Jacqueline(King Charlemagne-Talita Kumi) is an import from Europe like Astral Flash and Polish Patriot. Here I want to use an analogy. If we equate the racing in Mumbai with the quality of product (TBs) with US, racing at Bangalore with TBs at England and France , the products of Germany and Italy will match with Hyderabad.. No disrespect to anyone but an assessment which is personal and therefore may be affected by prejudice and bias . Of course a Fedrico Tesio may create a history but how many Tesios we can find in TB industry. Perhaps none. Not now. Commercial compulsions has forced Tesios to follow the dotted line. Leaving aside the diversion, let us look at Jacqueline(4-0-17-1-2) . a fairly impressive ,balanced pedigree which can partake with mid –distance races and classic distances too! Coming back to pedigree I find following . King Charlemagne (7-1-30-0-0) a proven sprinter sire and conforming to the current breeding practices covered Talita Kumi(5-1-9-2-4) a confirmed stayer (won 200m and 2200m races) and the result was a foal called Jacqueline(4-0-17-1-2) which withourt much effort indicated a TB well suited to a mile and above. She won a 1200m race coming from 10th. position and ended 3rd. in next race (1400m) from 12th position . It is immaterial that a win in this second run of her career would have made her richer by more than half a million rupees! In the third run of her career she won Rs.39,00,000 prize money and is trying to win a classic in the 4th. attempt. Of course some runners have Derby in their second or third attempt. The sire line - does not provide any comfort, confidence or encouragement for her ability but the dam line does. While King Charlemagne is a pure sprinter his dam is a runner up in two Oaks( Hollywood and Del Mar Oaks) runs in USA . Talita Kumi has also won 2 races at 2000m and 2200m and her dam Temple Music did win 4 races in her career. Correlating various factors it seems that Jacqueline is a potential and serious contender for this Derby.
Above opinions were expressed before Bangalore summer Derby run. She has won 3 Indian classics till date and is bound to be a favorite for Indian Derby. On merit she is a cinch – but do we honour, appreciate, admire and acknowledge merit in India? If your answer is yes, then tell me why more Indians win Noble Prize when they migrate to foreign countries!

Native Knight( Placerville- Native Tactics) apparently has no great bloodlines and is one of 70 odd produce of Placerville of 2006 .Though his dam has won 6 races but they were all sprint races and do not strengthen his chances for classic distances. Then how could he finish TWICE 1 ½ lengths behind two hard ridden class I runners ?Native Tactics(Blue Bird-Miss Oriental) is a ‘got abroad’ who came in foal and did her racing in India-trained by DR Byramjee and owned by D Khaitan .Blue Bird – born in USA was a champion sprinter who raced in Ireland and placed in several graded races.Miss Oriental(Habitat-Miss Bangkok) with Roman dosage(29-7-9-1-0) did not race and after producing 2 nondescript progeny in USA, was imported and Native Tactics is her first foal born in India. She was subsequently covered always by Young Senor .Thus apparently , the immediate female line gives the impression that Native Knight may do well in sprint races . But that is not true.A breeding axiom – reinforced and confirmed by genetic studies states that many times the attributes of grand children or great grandchildren resemble more than the next generation ( son/ daughter) .Storm Bird(Roman Dosage, 11-7-16-0-0) -sire of Blue Bird was also sire of Storm Cat (covering fee $ 500,000), was a champion sprinter and Habitat(dosage 13-14-13-4-2) – sire of Miss Oriental was a champion miler but Ivory Dawn- the dam of Blue Bird who never raced had a dosage(4-21-17-2-0) .Ivory Dawn( Sir Ivor-Dusky Evening) has a very impressive parentage . Sir Ivor(Sir Gaylord-Attica) was the winner of many classics including Epsom Derby and his ‘turn of foot’ was amazing. In Epsom Derby ,ridden by Lester Piggot ,he ran off the pace holding his horse till 200m and found himself 4 lengths behind connaught –ridden by young Sandy Barclay .He loosened the reigns , gave a tap to Sir Ivor and he won easing up by one length. The trainer of Sir Ivor – Vincent O’Brien had placed a bet of 500 pounds each way for Epsom Derby win , with a bookie BEFORE Sir Ivor started his racing career as a 3 year old – almost more than a year before , he ran his FIRST RACE!He is also very well ‘sex balanced’ with Sir Gaylord who is sire of both –Sir Ivor from the sire side and Habitat from the dam side ( I hope puritans will forgive me for making these silly statements – because I’m writing for a common punter) . Sir Gaylord a English horse went to USA and after beating them on their home ground in some races he became the favorite for Kentucky Derby but due to a hairline fracture few days before the race his Triple Crown dream was shattered . He was retired to stud .The question now is ? Did Native Knight receive some of the traits from these versatile and superior thoroughbreds? The answer is : he did. His two runs in the company of the best western India runners confirm this. But, what is in store for him in western India ? a place in Indian Derby- at the most . But he can add a classic to his name – a regional classic, not an Indian classic. Abs Fab has done that last year , Aboline is trying to do that this year.
Native Knight may be able to do that – somewhere, but away from Mumbai .Of course he can win the same ‘amount’ of money by placing in Indian Derby.
A new twist has been given to NK’s story. Poonawalla wanted –whole or a part of this horse but the deal fell through. I feel the connections have made a wrong decision!

Onassis (Glory of Dancer-Rahy’s Serenade) (5-1-9-1-0) has a very interesting pedigree. His dam is the maternal grand dam of Bruckner ,so he becomes ‘mama’ of Bruckner. Whether he acts as a ‘Kans mama’ of lord Krishna or has a benign affection for his ‘Bhanja’ will be known only after Indian Derby has been run. That’s not all . He is also related to Native Knight through Sir Ivor and Sir Gaylord. Any way all these relationships we will discuss after Derby if anyone of these two are able to upset the applecart of Jacqueline and Becket!
Onassis’s sire has produced 2 Indian Derby winners(Hotstepper and Antonios) in 2008 and 2009 and will create a unique record in Indian racing history if Onassis wins this Derby. It will also enable F K Rattonsey to emulate the hat trick feat of Indian Derby wins achieved by Ranjit V Bhatt!
Glory of Dancer(Shareef Dancer- Glory of Hera) (7-5-14-0-2) is a well known Indian sire and has a legitimate claim to produce better class runners because he has Northern Dancer, Forli, Nearctic ,Nearco in his pedigree chart but it is the female line(tail line) which gives him the ability to produce stayers .
Dam of Onassis – Rahy’s Seranade (Rahy-Shishma) (9-1-13-3-2) is a perfect example of a ‘conduit’ mare and has produced Frida Kahlo(stayer) and Diego Rivera(sprinter) when mated with different sires. At the end of her ‘productivity period’ she has given birth to Onassis, who was born at the wrong time and with wrong ownership!

I’m not trying to degrade or downgrade anybody but trying to emphasize the anomalous reality that with limited options (2 or 3 racetracks in the peak season) available in India compared to US(more than 50 or 60) and UK (more than 8 or 10) the adjustments, give and take policy does override the racing scenario – anywhere in the world.

These are my opinions, observations and inductive/deductive inferences based on experience and a bit of knowledge and I do not expect a reader to agree ‘in toto’
With me. In horseracing no one agrees with or accepts anyone else.

Jacquline - out of Indian Triple Crown

Long ago , I made a comment that Set Alight can be the first filly to win Indian Triple Crown in last 50 years, but she did not accept for Indian 2000G and lost the chance of a lifetime . People with hindsight would say that by losing Indian Derby she would have anyway lost the triple crown. But that's a different story.
Again, sometime back- before the running of 2000Guineas, I suggested that jacqueline could be aother filly, who could win the Triple Crown, but after going through the acceptance for Indian Oaks I must say that her chaces of winning Indian Derby are low and Indian Triple Crow is ,perhaps, out of reach.

Making money out of any venture, endeavour or business is a legitimate right of any individual or a group and this right can not be questioned. But sometimes, pride, sense of achievement and a will to excel forces some one ,like Fredrico Tessio to take his mare to England- hundreds of miles and several countries away to produce a colt called Nearco, who has changed the complexion of thoroughbred industry.

But our Indian stalwarts of thoroughbred industry routinely geld their promising colts and most of the time maintain the profit motive as the main theme of their racing activities.
But ,who are we to question them?
Neither a part, nor a partner nor an associate - what right people like us have to question them?
Nothing , Nil - absolutely no right...

Native Knight- missed opportunities?

NATIVE KNIGHT – A CLASSIC MATERIAL ?

Sometimes, it becomes very confusing when your thought process goes at variance with general perceptions . Let me be more specific.

3 yr. Olds run and win races and acquire a certain ‘status’ to claim a position in the classic scenario of main winter season. Jacqueline, Aboline, Fleet Indian , Sprint Star, Becket and many others have established themselves as serious contenders for various Derbies ,including Indian Derby. But a gelding called Native Knight(Placervile- Native Tactics) ,who has perhaps run only 3 races in his career but placed in 2 classics (Pune Derby and Indian 2000G) has never been discussed or spoken about by anyone!

Many books have been written about great thoroughbreds – Sea Biscuit, Secretariat, etc. While you may read hundreds of pages about these great thoroughbreds – all males, most of them sires ; you will hardly find a page or two written about some of the great female thoroughbreds – who contribute equal number of chromosomes to an offspring! They do provide stamina and endurance ,better than the sires who finally get all the credit for the performance of a classic winner! Examples abound in other fields also. A young Indian physicist , called SN Bose sends his research paper to Albert Einstein sitting thousands of miles away, for approval and comments and finally the research is published under the name ‘Bose-Einstein statistics’. The Indian scientist is thrilled to have his name ‘coupled ‘ with a world famous scientist. Everyone is happy. Einstein gets an apple in his already full basket and Bose( an Indian) is thrilled that his name is permanently ‘attached’ to Albert Einstein!

Something similar happens in thoroughbred racing.

While in US/UK/Europe/Australia a commercial sire covers more than 100 mares(sometimes 200+ ... how he does that!) in India our popular sires cover 50 to 70 mares in a season . while a mare can produce only one offspring in a year a sire can have more than 50+ and few of them are bound to run well and propagate the sire’s legend or the efficacy of the ‘dominant’ partner. In all walks of life this fallacy is perpetrated by homo-sapiens to achieve their goal.
Coming back to horseracing I must confess that I do give more importance to the dam than the sire because scientific studies have proved that ‘mitochondria’ which provides stamina and endurance to a runner is transmitted by the dam and NOT by the sire of a runner. Therefore , a Squanderer or a Elusive Pimpernal or a Set Alight or a Jacqueline has inherited the ‘staying’ ability from their dam and not from their sire! All breeders will not agree, some will curse me, some may write under assumed names – but the facts cannot be overlooked and brushed aside.

The reader may ask – why am I using such a long ‘prologue’ to the topic. Because ,I don’t want any iota of doubt in the mind of my reader about the points I want to make and the rationale behind my opinions.
Based on these presumptions I must say that I was surprised to note that the subject of this article Native Knight started racing in Pune and was only 1 ½ lengths behind Cabriolet in race no 143 during his FIRST RUN and again in Pune Derby he was only 1 ½ lengths behind hard-ridden Cabriolet! Race no 143 was his first run and Derby was the second run of racing career! Fantastic improvement ! This realization made me look a bit carefully into his pedigree . But that is not the end , because in Indian 2000Guineas he ended 3rd. behind Jacqueline and Sea Ruler .
